Dear Busan Lotte Hotel and Honorable Officials of the Korean Embassy:
It has come to my attention that the Busan Lotte Hotel in Central Pusan, Korea, keeps a Siberian Tiger named Caesar on "display" for guests. I respectfully ask the hotel and Korean authorities to enlist the aid of animal protection organizations to relocate Caesar to a free-range sanctuary or other humane environment where he may live among his own kind with ample space to move.
As long as this inherently wild creature remains trapped behind metal bars and glass, my family will not support Korean tourism and commerce.
According to complaints from visitors, Caesar's small open-roof pen overlooking the breakfast area offers no escape from a constant flow of people and extreme weather conditions. "When it is sunny he has little shade, when it rains he gets wet and when it's cold he has to break the ice on the stream to drink," one worried hotel guest claimed.
For eight years this tiger has lived on a tiny astro-turf patch surrounded by man-made rocks and plants. At night he performs tricks to entertain guests. "Exotic animals" kept as exhibits are denied their ingrained need to seek a mate, roam or hunt. Most wind up depressed or sick. Many develop psychotic behaviors such as pacing, head bobbing, cage rubbing and self-mutilation.
Caesar's artificial world can never replicate natural habitat. Neither commercial gain nor notoriety justifies his cruel captivity. Please intervene immediately and transfer Caesar to a more suitable home. I thank you for considering worldwide opinion in this serious matter and look forward to your response.
Sincerely,
